The Prediction Engine

The machine never slept.

It hummed beneath the city, buried under concrete and confidence, calculating futures with a patience humans never learned. Trillions of variables passed through its core every second — traffic decisions, medical outcomes, election results, heartbreaks that hadn’t happened yet.

Aarav Malhotra watched the graphs scroll past his terminal, green lines bending gently toward certainty.

“Another clean run,” his supervisor said, already walking away.

Clean runs meant comfort. Clean runs meant nobody asked questions.

Aarav stayed.

He always stayed.

At 2:17 a.m., when the city above him exhaled into silence, a warning flickered on his screen.

UNREGISTERED TIMELINE DETECTED

He frowned. The engine didn’t do timelines. It did probabilities. Futures that might happen — not futures that existed.

He pulled the logs.

What he saw made his throat tighten.

The engine hadn’t predicted a riot in Sector Twelve.

It had recorded it.

Timestamped. Lived. Finished.

Buildings reduced to ash. A skyline fractured by fire. And at the center of the data — a biometric signature tagged as PRIMARY ACTOR.

His own.

Aarav leaned back slowly, the hum of the machine suddenly sounding like breath.

Somewhere inside the system, tomorrow had already happened.

And it remembered him.
